Founded in 1903, the WEA is a charity dedicated to bringing high-quality, professional education into the heart of communities. With the support of nearly 3,000 volunteers, 2,000 tutors and over 10,000 members, we deliver friendly, accessible and enjoyable courses for adults from all walks of life.
WEA Southern stretches from the Isle of Wight around to Margate and north to the tops of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire We cover a wide range of communities from those living in very rural areas to the London commuter belt around the M25. There are WEA branches across the region with nearly 250 volunteers planning and publicising a vibrant cultural programme benefiting over 3000 students. We offer courses to help grow confidence and skills for life and work in the main urban areas, including Slough, Reading, Portsmouth, Southampton and Brighton and Hove.
We’re not like most other providers in the South East – we bring the education to you and it takes place in your own local meeting places. And it’s also local people who plan what courses are provided through our volunteer-led branches or through our many partnerships with local community organisations who represent the needs of different groups in our society. This includes migrant organisations, housing associations, children’s centres, schools and health and welfare organisations.
